Self-selected curriculum for your preferred learning needs
The greatest advantage of the Kyoto Women’s University curriculum is that it enables each student to freely establish their own learning plan according to different individual learning goals, such as studying a wide range of academic fields, acquiring practical qualifications for a future career, or pursuing a specialized area of study. In addition, the study of the mind, a subject unique to our university, and subjects designed to improve the use of information and language are compulsory for all students.
Basic structure of curriculum

Core curriculum
The core curriculum provides basic learning skills and knowledge. In addition to improving basic language skills and the use of information, students will acquire the practical knowledge and rich sensitivity required of the global citizen. Moreover, career education subjects are offered to help students reflect upon their future roles as women in society.
Electives
Elective field subjects are designed to deepen the student’s knowledge of specified areas of learning. Students acquire knowledge and skills related to their chosen academic fields. After acquiring basic knowledge and skills in research methods, students develop original viewpoints through various types of class participation and by undertaking cutting-edge research projects of particular interest to them.
Independent electives
Independent elective subjects are designed to further develop a student’s ability in an area of study not necessarily related to their major field of study. Students are provided with flexible learning opportunities focused on preparing them for qualifying examinations, the acquisition of comprehensive knowledge, the improvement of practical skills, etc.
Notes on curriculum building
- The semester-based system enables convenient scheduling.
- Enrolment in classes of other faculties, departments and courses is permitted.
- Enrolment in classes of other universities is allowed, and the acquired credits can be transferred.
- Qualifications relevant to a student’s chosen field can be acquired.
- Teaching licenses for several subjects can be acquired.
- Programs are available for English language training and long-term study abroad.
